SAMR

 Grade Level: 4 Grade

Subject:Social Studies

Duration: 60 minutes

Objective:

1.define the term needs and wants correctly after the lesson.

2.Write down correctly the examples of needs and wants after the teachers lesson.

3.Students will be able to differentiate between needs and wants and apply their understanding to real-life scenarios using the SAMR model.

Materials Needed:

  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Pictures or flashcards of items representing needs and wants
  • Devices with internet access (e.g., tablets, laptops)

SAMR Model Integration:

  1. Substitution (10 minutes):

    • Technology Integration: Use a device to display images of various items representing needs and wants.
    • Show pictures of basic needs like food, water, shelter, and clothing, as well as wants like toys, gadgets, and treats.
    • Discuss the differences between needs and wants with the class.
  2. Augmentation (15 minutes):

    • Technology Integration: Use digital flashcards or a slideshow presentation to engage students in identifying needs and wants.
    • Allow students to interact with the images by zooming in to see details or clicking to reveal labels or descriptions.
    • Encourage students to discuss with a partner why they think each item is a need or a want, using the additional information provided.
  3. Modification (20 minutes):

    • Technology Integration: Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a device.
    • Assign each group a real-life scenario (e.g., "You have $20 to spend at the grocery store. What items are needs and what items are wants?")
    • Instruct students to use the device to research prices of various items online and make decisions about what to purchase within their budget.
    • Groups will create a digital presentation (e.g., Google Slides) showcasing their chosen items and explaining why they classified them as needs or wants.
  4. Redefinition (15 minutes):

    • Technology Integration: Have students use a collaborative digital tool (e.g., Google Docs or Padlet) to share their group's presentation with the class.
    • Each group will present their findings and engage in a class discussion about the choices made.
    • Encourage students to reflect on how their understanding of needs and wants has changed based on their research and collaboration with peers.

Assessment:

  • Assess students' understanding of needs and wants based on their ability to correctly identify items in the digital activities and explain their choices.
  • Evaluate students' collaboration and communication skills during the group work and class discussions.

Extension:

  • For advanced students, challenge them to analyze advertisements or commercials using the SAMR model to identify how wants are often marketed as needs.
  • Have students create their own digital scenarios or presentations demonstrating their understanding of needs and wants in different contexts, such as during a natural disaster or when planning a family budget.
